I agree with you. We don't really have a good way to do animation on the web. Flash is dying. CSS3 Animation is more about moving and transforming separate images instead of optimizing frames of animation. And the %lt;VIDEO> tag only supports lossy formats so crisp animations are left behind. Animated GIFs is all that we have left and that kinda sucks.

Josh,

I agree with you. We don’t really have a good way to do animation on the web. Not that it's important but PNG's 'sort of' support animation in the form of APNG files, it just didn't catch on as widely as a regular PNG (Gekco-based and Opera browsers support it, IE and Safari doesn't, Chrome needs an add-on).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG
"The Animated Portable Network Graphics (APNG) file format is an unofficial extension to the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) specification. It allows for animated PNG files that work similarly to animated GIF files, while supporting 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency not available for GIFs. It also retains backward compatibility with non-animated PNG files."
I wish it would catch on. :)

Great info Billy,

Not that it’s important but PNG’s ‘sort of’ support animation in the form of APNG files, it just didn’t catch on as widely as a regular PNG (Gekco-based and Opera browsers support it, IE and Safari doesn’t, Chrome needs an add-on).

<a

We should probably revisit this research, especially in light of the rumors of a retina display iPad or Mac Book Airs.

Great question.
